Yemen’s Houthi group on Tuesday claimed it had carried out another drone attack targeting a Saudi Aramco oil refinery in Jazan, southwestern Saudi Arabia.
A Houthi military source, cited by the group’s Saba news agency, said several drones were used in the operation and described the strike as “precise”. The group said the attack was carried out in response to what it called Saudi violations of airspace over the Houthi-controlled northern provinces of Saada and Hajjah.
There was no immediate response from Saudi authorities or Saudi Aramco to the claim. Details regarding possible casualties or damage were also not immediately available.
The latest claim follows a similar announcement by the Houthis on Thursday, when the group said two drones had targeted the same refinery, again citing alleged Saudi air activity over Saada and Hajjah.
The reported escalation comes amid renewed Houthi attacks involving missiles and drones against areas controlled by Yemen’s internationally recognised government. Targets have included the Red Sea port city of Mocha and the oil-rich Marib province, along with commercial vessels operating in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab.
Yemen has remained embroiled in conflict since the Houthis captured large parts of the country’s north, including Sanaa, in late 2014. Saudi Arabia subsequently led a military coalition that intervened in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
A UN-brokered truce came into effect in April 2022 and formally expired six months later without an extension. However, a fragile de facto ceasefire largely held despite the absence of a formal agreement.
The recent attacks have raised fresh concerns over a possible escalation in the conflict and security risks affecting the region’s critical energy and maritime infrastructure.
