The trailer of ‘Daayra’, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, was released on Monday, offering a glimpse into Meghna Gulzar’s courtroom drama centred on crime, investigation, law and the difficult boundaries between justice and morality.
The trailer places Kareena and Prithviraj’s characters on opposing sides of the investigation, while introducing an ensemble cast that includes Jitendra Joshi, Kshitee Jog, Kanwaljeet Singh, Sandeep Kulkarni and Trupti Khamkar.
Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj portrays DCP Raman Kumar. Kareena said working with Gulzar challenged her to reconsider her understanding of the character.
“What I loved about working with Meghna is that she makes you question everything you think you know about a character. There’s so much thought behind every detail, but she never takes away your instinct as an actor,” Kareena said.
She added that playing Ajooni pushed her into an unfamiliar space and described working opposite Prithviraj as a particularly enjoyable experience.
Prithviraj said the complexity beneath Raman Kumar’s composed exterior attracted him to the role.
“What drew me to DCP Raman Kumar was the complexity beneath his composed exterior and the questions he finds himself grappling with during the investigation,” he said.
The actor said the film maintains objectivity throughout, allowing audiences to arrive at their own conclusions. He also praised Gulzar’s filmmaking and said working with Kareena made the experience especially rewarding.
Gulzar described ‘Daayra’ as a story that moves beyond conventional notions of right and wrong.
“Daayra doesn’t sit comfortably in black and white. It explores the grey and dismantles it,” she said, adding that the film examines how characters make choices, deal with their consequences and leave audiences to engage with what unfolds.
She praised the combination of Kareena and Prithviraj, along with the ensemble cast, for bringing the story’s exploration of law and justice to life.
Amrita Pandey, CEO of Junglee Pictures, said the production house has traditionally been drawn to stories rooted in real experiences and that ‘Daayra’ was developed with its writers and Gulzar.
Dr Jayantilal Gada, CMD of Pen Studios, said the film seeks to use cinema to raise questions while highlighting Gulzar’s depth, sensitivity and restraint as a filmmaker.
Produced by Junglee Pictures and Dr Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studios), ‘Daayra’ is inspired by true events and follows the aftermath of a crime that triggers widespread outrage across the country, leading to a chain of events and two investigations.
The film is scheduled to release in theatres on September 18, 2026.
