Rapper Badshah has made his debut in Marathi music with ‘Chimna’, a hip-hop track that combines traditional folk influences with his contemporary sound and celebrates Maharashtra’s culture and community.
Describing the song as an ode to the state, Badshah said he wanted to explore the richness of India’s regional music traditions.
“India’s regional music is a goldmine and I want to celebrate every corner of it. ‘Chimna’ is my love letter to Maharashtra’s rich creative canvas. I am incredibly grateful for how this project turned out, and this one’s dedicated to all my day one Maharashtrian fans!” he said.
The song brings together Marathi folk textures and modern hip-hop, with Badshah collaborating with Bollywood playback singer Divya Kumar and Marathi folk artist Nagesh Morwekar. Hiten has produced the track.
The accompanying music video was filmed entirely in Kolhapur and showcases different facets of everyday life in Maharashtra. Wedding processions, daily wage workers and mud wrestlers training at a traditional akhada feature prominently in the visuals. Marathi actress Neha Khan also appears in the video.
‘Chimna’ begins with traditional folk lines — “ek chimna chiv chivla / majha sajan jaga zhala ho / surya ugavla” — referring to a sparrow chirping, a beloved waking up and the rising sun, before moving into contemporary hip-hop verses.
Badshah also incorporates distinctly local references into the song with lines such as “dance kar rahi dekho maushi maushi / nacho jab tak subah chidiya bole”.
The track ends with the rapper declaring, “tumcha mulga badshah” — meaning “Your boy Badshah”.
Through ‘Chimna’, Badshah brings Marathi folk traditions and hip-hop together while highlighting Maharashtra’s cultural identity and regional artistic talent.
