A Kolkata-based businessman has approached the police alleging that he has been receiving extortion threats from persons claiming to be associated with the Bishnoi gang, with the callers demanding ₹5 crore and threatening to kill him and his family if the money is not paid.
According to police, the businessman, a resident of Sharat Bose Road in Bhowanipore, lodged a complaint at Bhowanipur Police Station after allegedly receiving repeated phone calls and voice messages from international numbers over the past several weeks.
In his complaint, the businessman stated that the first call was received on June 30, when the caller identified himself as a member of the Bishnoi gang and demanded ₹5 crore. He alleged that similar calls and voice messages continued over the following month, with the threats escalating to include death threats against him and his family.
Following the complaint, Kolkata Police registered the matter and initiated an investigation. The case has been handed over to the Special Unit of Kolkata Police, which is examining whether the threats originated from members of the Bishnoi gang or whether unidentified individuals are using the gang’s name to carry out the alleged extortion attempt.
Investigators are also verifying the origin of the international phone numbers and the authenticity of the claims made by the callers.
A similar incident had surfaced last year when Mumbai Police arrested a man accused of demanding ₹1 crore from comedian Kapil Sharma in the name of Lawrence Bishnoi’s associate Goldy Brar. However, the subsequent investigation reportedly found no direct link between the accused and the actual Bishnoi criminal network.
The Bishnoi gang, headed by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, is regarded as a transnational organised crime syndicate allegedly involved in contract killings, extortion and international drug trafficking. According to available information, the network operates through decentralised cells across India, Canada, the United States and parts of Europe, with operations allegedly coordinated using smuggled mobile phones and encrypted communication platforms.
