Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday called on Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu at Lok Niwas for an informal interaction and presented him with a copy of the Assembly’s quarterly magazine, Vidhan Chetna.
According to Lok Niwas, Gupta met Sandhu during the interaction and presented the Lieutenant Governor with the latest issue of the Delhi Legislative Assembly publication.
In a related administrative development, senior Indian Police Service officer Varsha Sharma has been appointed Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Lieutenant Governor. She will replace Shivendra Kant Tewari, who is currently serving in the position.
Sharma is presently Additional Commissioner of Delhi Police in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). Following the change, Tewari will replace her in the EOW.
Earlier on Saturday, Gupta addressed students and academic leaders at a technical university in Faridabad, stressing the importance of research and ground-level evidence in policymaking.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Vice Chancellors’ Conclave 2026 at the International Institute of Research and Studies, he said effective legislation required reliable facts, credible research and evidence from the ground.
Gupta said legislatures were responsible for making laws, approving budgets and holding governments accountable, while universities could strengthen these functions by providing research-based inputs, expert perspectives on issues such as environmental legislation and greater opportunities for students to engage with democratic institutions.
The two-day conclave, being held on August 22 and 23, is themed “Green Campus: Empowering Higher Educational Institutions for a Sustainable and Resilient Future.”
The event was attended by Dr Prashant Bhalla, president of the host group of educational institutions; Dr H.D. Charan; members of Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi; chancellors, vice chancellors and directors from universities across the country; representatives of IITs, IIMs, NITs and IIITs; faculty members and students.
Congratulating the host educational group on completing 30 years, Gupta said its motto, “Creating Better Humans”, acquired greater significance when linked with the responsibility of protecting the planet.
“Better human beings and a better Earth cannot be separate goals,” he said.
Describing climate change as a present reality, Gupta pointed to record heat, winter smog, air pollution, sudden flooding and declining groundwater levels across Delhi and the National Capital Region.
