Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s political organisation will contribute $100,000 to Democratic candidates and political causes as he prepares for his first November election absence in nearly a decade.
Krishnamoorthi said his organisation, Equal Opportunity Now, would direct the funds to candidates and political groups in Illinois and other parts of the US. The organisation operates under the registered name Reviving American Jobs Again PAC, also known as RAJA PAC.
“For the first time in nearly a decade, I won’t be on the ballot this November,” Krishnamoorthi said in a fundraising message, acknowledging that the situation felt unusual after years of campaigning for votes.
The message did not specify why he would not appear on the November ballot or identify all the candidates and organisations that will receive the funds. It said the $100,000 allocation was intended to help a new generation of Democratic candidates and strengthen the party’s prospects in congressional and other races.
Krishnamoorthi said his decision not to contest would not reduce his political involvement. He said the financial support was aimed at candidates who could benefit from early investment while campaigning to represent working families.
The PAC’s messaging highlights issues including wages, employment, democratic institutions and economic opportunity.
“My name may not be on the ballot. But I’m still all in,” Krishnamoorthi said.
Born in New Delhi and raised in the United States, Krishnamoorthi has represented an Illinois congressional district in the US House since January 2017. His congressional work has included intelligence, national security, economic policy and strategic competition with China.
The November midterm elections will determine control of both chambers of Congress, with competitive races expected across several states.
