Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said meaningful political decisions should produce tangible changes in people’s lives while safeguarding the country’s long-term interests, rather than being driven by short-term electoral considerations.
Addressing the World Leaders Forum organised by The Economic Times, Modi said political discourse often focuses on announcements whose impact lasts only briefly. He alleged that previous governments had sometimes made pre-election announcements that risked dividing society, while stressing that lasting national transformation required policies designed to deliver benefits both in the present and the future.
Citing the PM-KUSUM Yojana and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as examples, Modi said the two schemes were aimed at addressing everyday concerns while creating long-term benefits for citizens.
Under PM-KUSUM, farmers have been relieved of the uncertainty surrounding electricity availability for irrigation, he said.
Referring to the rooftop solar initiative, Modi said the government had envisaged putting “a sun on the roof of every house”. More than 50 lakh families are now associated with the PM Surya Ghar scheme, he said.

According to the Prime Minister, the government has provided more than Rs 22,000 crore to beneficiary households for installing solar systems. Families can use the electricity generated for household requirements, while surplus power can be sold to the grid, helping reduce electricity bills and create an additional source of income.
Modi said the scheme was also addressing problems faced by ordinary households in the past, including power cuts that could spoil milk and disrupt children’s studies. He said access to affordable electricity and appliances was becoming a reality for more families.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the benefits of rooftop solar and other long-term initiatives would continue beyond electoral cycles, improving household incomes and quality of life while supporting economic activity.
Reaffirming his government’s commitment to accelerating India’s development, Modi said efforts would continue with full dedication. He expressed confidence that India would play a significant role in shaping the future global order and emerge as a stronger, safer and more capable nation contributing meaningfully on the world stage.
