Uttar Pradesh Minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief O.P. Rajbhar on Saturday criticised Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav over his recent “chavanni” remark, accusing him of insulting the Jat community and warning that he would face political consequences.
Rajbhar’s remarks came after Yadav used the “chavanni”, or 25-paise, reference while speaking about leaders who had joined alliances with the SP but later moved away. The remark was widely interpreted as a dig at Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president and Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary.
Yadav had said that his party had turned a “chavanni” into a rupee, but the leaders concerned eventually left the alliance. He said the SP would now focus on strengthening its relationship with the public and advancing social justice.
Speaking to IANS, Rajbhar said Yadav appeared to have lost his political balance and was making statements without considering their consequences.
Backing Jayant Chaudhary’s criticism of the remark, Rajbhar alleged that the SP chief had insulted the Jat community.
“Certainly, he has insulted the Jat community. The Jat community made Mulayam Singh ji the Chief Minister, and today he is making remarks against the same Jat community. He should read his father’s history,” Rajbhar said.
The SBSP chief also invoked the political legacy of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, claiming that he had played an important role in establishing Mulayam Singh Yadav as a prominent political figure.
“If anyone worked to make his father a leader, it was Chaudhary Charan Singh, and he is now pointing fingers at him and that very community. He will have to face the consequences,” Rajbhar said.
Rajbhar further accused Akhilesh Yadav of making statements without understanding their implications or whom they could offend.
The remarks have added to the political controversy surrounding Yadav’s “chavanni” comment, which has triggered sharp reactions from former allies and rival political parties in Uttar Pradesh.
