Bengal CM Adhikari Vows to End ‘Anti-National’ Activities at Jadavpur University

Kolkata, August 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday vowed to end what he described as “anti-national” activities at Jadavpur University (JU) and said his government would establish the spirit of nationalism on the campus “at any cost”.

Addressing a programme related to the Annapurna Yojana in his Bhabanipur constituency in south Kolkata, Adhikari said the government would not compromise on issues of patriotism, nationalism and statehood.

“They do not let Vande Mataram be sung in JU. The national flag is not hoisted there. They do not let the Education Department officials enter the university campus. They do not let CCTV cameras be installed there. But we will establish nationalism inside and outside Jadavpur,” he said.

His remarks came against the backdrop of two recent clashes involving activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Adhikari also criticised those who had commented on the clashes on social media, saying those living in West Bengal would have to respect what he described as patriotic symbols and sentiments.

“I have seen many people crying on social media over the JU clashes. They should listen: if they want to live in this state, they will have to sing Vande Mataram. There is no compromise with patriotism, nationalism and statehood,” he said.

Referring to the slogan “Kashmir Mange Azadi”, Adhikari said the government would act against those raising such slogans and reiterated that there would be no compromise on his position.

The Chief Minister also said that criticism or sympathy expressed by sections of the media would not change the government’s stance towards those who, according to him, did not observe Republic Day or Independence Day.

“This state government is here to fulfil the dream of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. There will be no compromise with nationalism, traditional culture,” he added.

Several students from both SFI and ABVP were injured in the recent clashes at Jadavpur University. Police have registered two FIRs in connection with the incidents, but no arrests have been made so far.
