The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday searched the residence of a Food and Supplies Department official in Jhargram district as part of an investigation into alleged corruption involving seven officials of the department.
An Inspector and a Sub-Inspector of the ACB conducted the search at the residence of Thakurdas Baske in Nripenpalli, Jhargram, triggering activity in the area. Baske is currently posted as an Inspector in the Food and Supplies Department in Bankura district.
The investigation into the alleged corruption was already underway, following which all seven officials were asked to appear before the ACB. Six of them reportedly appeared before the agency, while Baske did not.
Sources said the search of Baske’s residence was subsequently conducted after his failure to appear before the ACB. Baske was not present at the house during the operation and is currently reported to be absconding. His wife is being questioned, according to sources.
It was not immediately clear whether the investigators recovered any documents or other material during the search. The ACB has also not disclosed the specific nature of the corruption allegations being examined in the case.
A senior police officer said ACB teams had begun search operations at different locations in Jhargram city on Saturday morning before reaching Baske’s residence.
“The investigators are probing his role into the allegations of corruption against him and whether anyone else is involved in this corruption case,” the officer said.
The development comes amid the state government’s stated focus on tackling corruption and criminal activities. The government has maintained a zero-tolerance approach towards criminal and unethical activities, including extortion.
Police have also arrested several Trinamool Congress leaders in connection with various alleged offences, including extortion, molestation, threats and intimidation.
The ACB investigation into the seven Food and Supplies Department officials is continuing, with further details about the allegations and possible involvement of others awaited.
