Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted citizens and scientists on National Space Day, highlighting India’s growing presence in the global space sector and praising the country’s young engineers, designers, coders and scientists for developing new technologies.
Sharing a video featuring excerpts from his speeches, Modi said India’s expanding role in the global space order was clearly reflected in the country’s space programme. He recalled his remarks in Ayodhya that India had entered a “new cycle of change”.
“Together, we have resolved to make India a developed nation by 2047, and the space sector plays a vital role in achieving this goal,” the Prime Minister said in the video.
Modi particularly praised the contribution of Gen Z to India’s space ambitions, saying young professionals were working on technologies across propulsion systems, composite materials, rocket stages and satellite platforms that were not imagined in the country some time ago.
“Today, these Gen Z engineers, designers, coders and scientists are building new technologies,” he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the growing role of India’s private space sector, saying its talent was establishing a distinct identity globally. He added that India’s space sector had become a “magnet” for global investors.
Modi also credited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) with inspiring the next generation of scientists. “Seeing the success of ISRO, many children think that when they grow up, they too will become scientists,” he said.
National Space Day is observed on August 23 to commemorate the successful soft landing of the Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander near the Moon’s south pole in 2023. India became the first country to reach the region with the achievement, which marked a major milestone in the country’s space programme.
As part of the 2026 observance, ISRO Chairman and Secretary of the Department of Space Dr V Narayanan called for greater innovation, collaboration and ambition to help India emerge as a global leader in space.
This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme, “Towards Viksit Bharat: Innovating, Collaborating and Aspiring to Global Space Leadership.” The theme focuses on strengthening India’s scientific and technological capabilities while promoting innovation, partnerships and wider participation in the global space ecosystem.
In his National Space Day 2026 message, Narayanan stressed the need to continue pushing the boundaries of science and technology and building partnerships to further strengthen India’s space ecosystem.
