Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Harmeet Singh Kalka and general secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlon led a protest outside Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s residence on Saturday, demanding action against Congress leader Deepender Hooda over his alleged description of 1984 anti-Sikh riots convict Sajjan Kumar as a “role model”.
Members of the Delhi Gurdwara Committee and leaders and workers of the Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi State participated in the protest. Police detained Kalka, Kahlon and hundreds of other protesters and took them to an undisclosed location.
Speaking to the media from a police bus after their detention, Kalka and Kahlon demanded that Rahul Gandhi immediately expel Hooda from the Congress and apologise to the Sikh community, particularly families of the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The two leaders questioned how Sajjan Kumar, who is serving two life sentences in cases related to the 1984 killings, could be described as a role model by a Congress leader.
They alleged that the statement reflected the Congress party’s attitude towards the Sikh community and claimed that the Gandhi family had historically protected leaders accused in connection with the 1984 violence.
Kalka and Kahlon further alleged that leaders accused in the riots had previously been given ministerial positions, parliamentary memberships, chairmanships and other senior positions under Congress governments and had also held important positions within the party.
They claimed that Hooda’s statement had not been made independently and alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s support had encouraged him to make the remarks.
The Delhi Sikh leaders also urged Congress leaders in Punjab to take note of the controversy and questioned the party’s position on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
They warned that if the Congress did not change what they described as its approach towards the Sikh community, the party could face another electoral setback.
Kalka and Kahlon said the Delhi Gurdwara Committee would continue to pursue cases against those accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and work for justice for the affected families.
A large number of DSGMC members, office-bearers, leaders and workers of the Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi State were present during the protest.
