Bihar Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday extended the RJD’s full support to the student movement planned for August 25, including the proposed march to the Chief Minister’s residence, while raising questions over the state government’s handling of student grievances, finances and law-and-order issues.
Asked whether he would personally join the students on the streets on August 25, Yadav said he would announce his decision at the appropriate time.
Targeting the government over the ongoing student protests at Gardanibagh in Patna, the RJD leader said students were distressed and alleged that their concerns were not receiving adequate attention.
He said the government should engage directly with the protesters, arguing that their problems could not be resolved without dialogue.
Yadav also questioned the state’s financial management, claiming that Bihar’s finances were under serious pressure. He alleged that the government’s expenditure was exceeding its income and that increasing dependence on borrowing could eventually create difficulties in paying employees’ salaries and pensions.
He further accused the state government of widespread corruption.
Referring to reports of a reduction in the loan limit under the Bihar Student Credit Card Scheme from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 2 lakh, Yadav said the scheme had been introduced under the Saat Nischay programme during the tenure of the Mahagathbandhan government. He alleged that the reported reduction reflected the government’s worsening financial position.
Yadav also claimed that every person in Bihar carried a debt burden of around Rs 27,000, linking the figure to the state’s rising borrowing.
On law-and-order issues, he questioned the government over incidents involving pellet guns and AK-47 firing in the state. He asked who had authorised the use of force and sought an explanation from the government.
The RJD leader also alleged irregularities in the extension of contractual employees’ tenures and raised broader questions about the functioning of the state administration.
Commenting on rising sugar prices, Yadav criticised the Centre and warned that inflationary pressures could increase further.
His remarks came amid the continuing student agitation in Patna, with the August 25 protest expected to intensify pressure on the Bihar government to address the students’ demands.
