Ethanol Blending Policy Hurting Consumers, Disrupting Sugar Supply: Ashok Gehlot

Jaipur, August 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticised the Narendra Modi government over the large-scale blending of ethanol with petrol, alleging that inadequate preparation for the policy has created problems for consumers, disrupted sugar availability and increased household expenses.

Gehlot said a substantial quantity of sugarcane was being diverted from sugar production towards ethanol manufacturing, which he claimed was contributing to reduced sugar availability and higher prices.

“Another example of the Modi government’s shortsightedness and wrong decisions is the decision to blend large quantities of ethanol with petrol without adequate preparation. The people of the country are having to suffer the consequences of this decision on several fronts,” Gehlot said.

He claimed that sugar prices had increased by Rs 14 to Rs 17 per kg within 15 days, adding that the issue was not limited to inflation.

Gehlot also referred to complaints about vehicle performance, including alleged engine damage and lower mileage following ethanol blending. He said such problems could increase expenses for vehicle owners through higher fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

“This is nothing short of looting the hard-earned money of the common man,” he said.

The Congress leader alleged that the policy was benefiting a limited group of industrialists and the government while ordinary consumers were bearing the additional financial burden.

Gehlot also raised concerns about alleged air and water pollution associated with ethanol production. He argued that the Centre should have undertaken comprehensive planning, assessment and preparation before implementing the policy on such a large scale.

“The central government has taken such a decision without making adequate preparations, and the people of the country are now paying the price,” he said.

Gehlot further alleged that the Modi government had lost public trust and was therefore unable to convince citizens about the benefits of its decisions.

He called for a comprehensive review of the ethanol-blending policy, taking into account its impact on consumers, sugar availability, vehicle owners and the environment.
