Hockey World Cup: India Lose 1-3 to Netherlands, Semi-Final Hopes Hang by a Thread

Amstelveen, August 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a 1-3 defeat against co-hosts the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 on Saturday, leaving their hopes of reaching the semi-finals in serious jeopardy.

The Netherlands moved to six points at the top of Pool E, adding three points to the three carried forward from the first stage. India remain without a point and will next face Argentina, who are also yet to open their account.

England, on three points, were scheduled to face Argentina later on Saturday. An England victory would end India’s mathematical chances of reaching the semi-finals.

India started with an aggressive full press and made early entries into the Dutch circle, but the hosts remained composed defensively. The opening quarter ended goalless despite an entertaining exchange of attacks.

The Netherlands gradually took control of possession in the second quarter and put India under sustained pressure. Their first penalty corner came in the 13th minute, but Sumit produced an excellent rush to block Jip Janssen’s flick, with Sanjay completing the clearance.

Dilpreet Singh had India’s best opportunity of the first half in the 23rd minute but saw his hurried effort stopped by the Dutch goalkeeper. Rajinder Singh was unable to capitalise on the rebound.

India eventually earned their first penalty corner in the 35th minute after a successful video referral overturned a long-corner decision. Captain Harmanpreet Singh’s initial flick was blocked by the Dutch rushers, while his second attempt went wide after India retained the penalty corner following another referral.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 41st minute when Duco Telgenkamp capitalised on a defensive lapse to put the Netherlands ahead.

India continued to search for an equaliser, but goalkeeper Derk Meijer denied Harmanpreet from another penalty corner. The Netherlands carried a 1-0 lead into the final quarter.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 51st minute when Koen Bijen sent a precise centre from the right and Tjep Hoedemakers got a crucial deflection in front of goal to beat Mohith HS.

India responded almost immediately. After another penalty corner was awarded following a foot infringement, Harmanpreet finally found the target, beating Meijer to his right to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

However, the Netherlands restored their two-goal advantage just four minutes later. Manpreet Singh was dispossessed in midfield, allowing the hosts to launch a swift counter-attack, which Thijs van Dam finished with a composed volley past Mohith.

India pushed forward in search of another goal but could not breach a disciplined Dutch defence in the closing stages.

The 3-1 victory sent the Netherlands into the semi-finals, while India now need to beat Argentina and depend on other Pool E results to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
