The Delhi Police’s Outer District has intensified its verification drive against foreign nationals overstaying in India under Operation VISTA, tracing 18 individuals whose visas or other travel documents had expired, officials said on Saturday.
The operation was conducted by the Outer District Foreigner Cell in coordination with local police stations to identify and verify foreign nationals suspected of staying in India without valid documentation. The 18 individuals include nine Thai nationals, four Nigerians, three Bangladeshis, one Ugandan and one Guinean national.
Police said deportation proceedings have been initiated against those found to be overstaying, in coordination with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and other immigration authorities.
The Foreigner Cell, headed by Inspector Sunder Singh, has been tasked with tracing and verifying such foreign nationals. The drive involves intelligence gathering, verification and preventive measures to identify individuals residing in India without valid documents.
In one operation, police received specific information that some Bangladeshi nationals were staying in the area despite the expiry of their Indian visas and were planning to move elsewhere.
A team comprising Head Constables Umed, Ravinder and Ashish, Constables Rohit and Sumer, and Woman Constable Renu, under Inspector Sunder Singh, conducted discreet surveillance near Peeragarhi Chowk and DDA Park.
The suspects allegedly tried to disperse after noticing the police but were intercepted. They were identified as Shihab Sanjid, Md Arman Miah and Mehedi Hasan Rabby, all Bangladeshi nationals. Police said they could not produce valid identity or travel documents and were found carrying expired passports and visas. They were subsequently taken into custody and deportation proceedings initiated.
In a separate exercise involving Paschim Vihar East and Nihal Vihar police stations along with the Foreigner Cell, 15 more foreign nationals were detained for verification. They comprised nine Thai nationals, four Nigerians, one Ugandan and one Guinean. Police said their passports and visas had expired.
The Nigerian nationals were identified as Onyeka Emmanuel Ndedigwe, Njideka Esther Emmanuel alias Esther, James Nwachukwu Chukwu and Promise Akowe. The Guinean national was identified as Buntche Precious and the Ugandan national as Umar Lubowa. The nine Thai nationals were also found to have expired travel documents.
Police said further legal action and deportation proceedings are being undertaken in coordination with the FRRO and concerned immigration authorities.
The operation is being conducted under the guidance of Outer District Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Singh.
