A 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi died on Saturday morning after allegedly falling from the sixth floor of a building on the institute campus, police said.
A PCR call was received at Kishangarh Police Station around 8:33 a.m. regarding a student allegedly jumping from a building at the IIT Delhi campus. Police personnel reached the spot and found the injured student, who was taken to the IIT Delhi campus hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The crime scene investigation team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team were called to the site for inspection and evidence collection.
During the preliminary inquiry, police identified the deceased as a 31-year-old student of the M.Sc. Physics Department at IIT Delhi. According to the investigation so far, he had entered the campus through the main gate at around 8 a.m. He later went to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift to the sixth floor and allegedly fell from the front side of the building.
Police said no apparent injury marks other than those attributable to the fall had been noticed during the inquiry. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. A mobile phone was found in the student’s pocket and will be examined in accordance with due procedure.
Police are also obtaining counselling records and other relevant information from the institute as they verify the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further legal action is being taken in accordance with the law.
The incident occurred a day after a 19-year-old third-year B.Sc. Nursing student allegedly died by suicide by hanging in her hostel room in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar area.
The nursing student, a resident of Najafgarh, was found by fellow students and taken to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The hospital subsequently informed the Rajinder Nagar Police Station. A police team visited the hostel and a crime scene investigation team examined the site. Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
