Chinese President Xi Jinping has described China and India as “partners, not rivals” and “opportunities, not threats” for each other’s development, calling for a steady and long-term improvement in bilateral relations.
Xi made the remarks during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, according to a statement issued by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry said Xi and Modi had met twice over the past two years, guiding bilateral ties from a “restart” towards “further enhancement”. Institutional exchanges have gradually resumed, cooperation has expanded and bilateral trade has reached a new high, it said.
According to the statement, Xi said that despite differences in their national conditions, China and India could learn from each other’s strengths, support one another, achieve mutual success and pursue common development.
He said the two countries, as the world’s two most populous nations and important members of the Global South, had significant responsibilities amid a complex and volatile international environment.
Xi outlined four points that he said should guide the steady and long-term development of China-India relations.
First, he called for an objective and rational strategic understanding to ensure the right direction for bilateral ties. Describing China and India as partners rather than rivals, he said this assessment reflected the development stages of both countries, the international environment and their common interests.
Second, Xi stressed the need to pursue mutual success through win-win cooperation, saying development should remain the greatest common denominator while friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation are strengthened.
Third, he called for reducing interference through mutual respect and understanding. The two countries, he said, should pursue the parallel development and mutual promotion of bilateral relations and border issues while maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border.
Fourth, Xi urged China and India to contribute to the wider world through open and inclusive multilateral cooperation.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the two countries should support each other’s BRICS presidencies and deepen coordination through multilateral platforms including the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and G20.
Xi also called for joint efforts to address global challenges and an unequivocal commitment to international fairness and justice.
