Singer-songwriter Rhiti Tiwari, daughter of actor-politician and Bhojpuri star Manoj Tiwari, has opened up about the intense pressure she experienced while growing up as the daughter of a well-known public figure.
During Sunday’s Weekend Ka Vaar episode, Rhiti said she had spent much of her life consciously controlling her behaviour out of fear that anything she did could damage her family’s reputation.
She recalled being taught from a young age to be careful about how she laughed, spoke and behaved simply because she was Manoj Tiwari’s daughter.
“I will ruin my family’s name. In fact, I am holding myself back. Do you understand what I am saying?” she said.
Explaining the source of her anxiety, Rhiti said her father’s public identity had shaped the way she viewed herself.
“Because of who my father is. I worry if I give him a very bad name. Since I was born, I have been told that I am his daughter. Act properly. Laugh properly. Why did you speak like this? Why did you act like this?” she said.
She added that she was repeatedly told to be cautious about what she said or did in public and to think several times before expressing an opinion.
Rhiti said the constant conditioning eventually made her feel disconnected from her true personality. “But I have become something else. I am something else. I have a right. What happened to me in life? Maybe I carried this thing so deeply inside me that I couldn’t stay real,” she said.
The conversation also touched on superstar Salman Khan, whom Rhiti said made her feel understood at a time when she had rarely experienced such acceptance.
“For the first time in my life, I felt that someone was able to see me. He was able to understand me,” she said.
She also spoke about struggling to express her emotions openly, saying she was not someone who could cry in front of a large group of people.
Rhiti recalled advice associated with Salman Khan about building an identity separate from her father’s achievements. While consoling her, Aasif Khan said, “Father has earned his own respect. You should earn your own respect. I wanted to do that.”
Earlier, Rhiti had also spoken about facing severe online abuse because of her identity as Manoj Tiwari’s daughter, including rape and death threats. She said she faced intense threats and abuse whenever she expressed her opinions publicly.
