A man in his 50s was hospitalised after being attacked by a shark off Glenfield Beach in Western Australia on Monday morning, officials said.
The Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said the incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. local time at Glenfield Beach, located about 380 km north of Perth.
Two ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene, and the injured man was taken to hospital as a priority emergency, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to local media reports, the attack took place about 40 metres offshore and the victim sustained serious injuries to his leg.
Authorities have not yet identified the species or size of the shark involved. Members of the public have been advised to exercise additional caution in the area.
Australia has witnessed several shark attacks in recent years. Last year, a teenager suffered life-threatening injuries after being attacked while swimming off Thursday Island, near the north coast of Queensland. He was initially taken to a local hospital with serious abdominal injuries before being airlifted more than 1,000 km to Townsville. Queensland Health said at the time that he remained in critical condition. The shark species was not identified.
In another incident, on September 6, 2025, a surfer died after being attacked by a shark at Long Reef Beach in northern Sydney. Police said emergency services responded to reports of a critically injured man at the beach, located about 16 km northeast of central Sydney.
