Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh on Monday vowed firm action against those responsible for the killing of four people, including two women, in separate attacks in Tamenglong and Noney districts, asserting that violence would not be allowed to derail the state’s return to peace and normalcy.
Strongly condemning the killings, Singh expressed anguish over the loss of innocent lives and said those responsible would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“I have directed the concerned authorities to take all necessary measures to ascertain the facts, identify those responsible and ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favour,” Singh said in a statement.
“Let there be no doubt: those responsible for this violence will be pursued in accordance with law and held accountable. At this critical juncture, no act of violence will be allowed to derail Manipur’s path towards peace and normalcy,” he added.
Singh also conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, stressing that the safety of every citizen remained paramount.
According to police officials, two people, including a woman, were killed in an attack at Tollen Kuki village under Kaimai Police Station in Tamenglong district. Two others, including a woman, were shot dead at Longpi village under Nungba Police Station in Noney district. All four victims belonged to the Kuki tribal community.
Security forces launched a massive combing operation following the attacks to track down the perpetrators.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had also condemned the killings, calling violence against civilians unacceptable.
Meanwhile, several organisations, MLAs from the Kuki and Naga communities and local leaders, including the Kaimai Village Authority, condemned the Tollen attack as an alleged attempt to create division between communities.
In a separate incident, three to four houses belonging to Rongmei Naga community members were reportedly burnt at Khedaghar under Jiribam Police Station late Sunday. No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire and those responsible have not been officially established.
Security personnel were deployed in the area, while troops and Quick Action Teams were kept ready for immediate deployment.
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) also condemned the killings. Its spokesperson and Secretary, Information and Publicity, Ginza Vualzong, alleged involvement of Naga armed groups and raised concerns over reports of NSCN-IM cadres operating through or alongside ZUF-K and Naga Village Guards.
The KZC urged the Centre to act decisively against armed-group activity, warning that continued violence could push Manipur towards another major conflict.
