Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly objected to the removal of four important papers related to Punjab and Sikh history from the postgraduate syllabus of the MA History programme at Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Advocate Dhami described the decision as deeply concerning and unfortunate, saying that Punjab’s history should have a meaningful place in higher education, particularly at an institution with longstanding historical links to the region’s history, language, culture and heritage.
He said Punjab’s history was not confined to a particular region but formed an integral and significant part of the history of India. The land of Punjab has played a decisive role in shaping the country’s historical trajectory through the lives and journeys of the Sikh Gurus, the creation of the Khalsa, Sikh struggles, the Sikh Empire and numerous other major historical developments.
According to Dhami, removing such subjects from MA-level study could distance students from their heritage and weaken historical awareness among future generations.
He said universities were not only responsible for introducing new subjects but also for preserving and transmitting historical knowledge based on facts and research.
Dhami urged the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University and the concerned academic authorities to reconsider the decision. He called for the papers related to Punjab and Sikh history to be restored to the MA History syllabus and included as before.
He further urged the university to avoid decisions that could create an impression of diminishing the academic significance of Punjab’s historical heritage and Sikh history.
