The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Sunday said one Indian seafarer remained missing after an attack on the Panama-flagged commercial vessel MT El Gaia off the coast of Oman.
The vessel had 14 Indian crew members on board, of whom 13 have been rescued and safely brought ashore, the ministry said. Search and rescue operations are continuing for the missing seafarer.
“We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel MT El Gaia off the coast of Oman earlier today. Of the 14 Indian crew onboard, 13 Indians have been rescued so far. Search and Rescue operations for the missing Indian national are continuing,” the MEA said.
The Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the operation and coordinating with Omani authorities. The MEA thanked the Omani authorities for their assistance in rescuing the Indian crew members.
The ministry also called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region and urged all sides to pursue dialogue and diplomacy.
“The targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers, civilians, and civilian infrastructure in the region is unacceptable,” the MEA said, while calling for the restoration of free and safe navigation and uninterrupted commercial movement through international waterways in the region.
The Indian Embassy in Oman said search and rescue efforts for the 13 rescued Indian nationals had been completed, while Omani authorities continued efforts to locate the remaining crew member.
The latest incident comes weeks after the MEA condemned an attack on the Indian-flagged commercial vessel MSV Faize Noore Oliya, which sank in the Red Sea off Yemen on August 4. All 13 Indian nationals aboard that vessel were rescued, with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh coordinating with Yemeni authorities over their safety and security.
