Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday welcomed UK Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India, Dr Andrew Fleming, to the state, saying his latest visit could open a “new chapter” in closer ties between Assam and the United Kingdom.
Fleming said on social media that the visit marked his 10th trip to Assam and coincided with an important week as several leading UK infrastructure companies were scheduled to visit the state.
“This is an anniversary visit (10th time to Assam) and an exciting one as we have some top UK infrastructure companies visiting this week,” Fleming said.
He also praised the newly inaugurated terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, saying the visiting British infrastructure companies would likely appreciate the facility.
“Like me they will surely appreciate the new Guwahati Airport terminal – wow, Singapore vibes with an Assamese touch,” Fleming said.
Responding to the diplomat, Sarma welcomed him to Assam and expressed confidence that the visit would contribute to stronger cooperation between the state and the UK.
“Welcome to Assam, H.E Fleming. I am sure this anniversary visit will mark new chapter in closer UK-Assam ties, bolstered by the strong partnership between India and the UK under Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership,” the Chief Minister said.
Sarma also offered a light-hearted clarification about the airport terminal’s distinctive design, highlighting its use of natural greenery and bamboo.
“P.S- All these plants in the Airport are natural, complementing the bamboos used in the Airport design,” he said.
The interaction comes as Assam seeks to deepen engagement with international investors and infrastructure companies, particularly in areas linked to the Northeast’s expanding connectivity and economic potential.
The visit by Fleming and the expected participation of British infrastructure companies also underline the growing scope for business and infrastructure cooperation between Assam and the UK.
The new Guwahati airport terminal, meanwhile, has become a prominent symbol of the state’s infrastructure expansion while incorporating elements reflecting Assam’s cultural and architectural identity.
