Mumbai, September 14, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

DMK parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi has stepped up consultations with key regional leaders following the defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill on delimitation and an increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats, fuelling speculation over efforts to build a broader political platform beyond the BJP and Congress.

As part of the outreach, Kanimozhi met Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray at his Matoshree residence in Mumbai’s Bandra. Thackeray personally welcomed the DMK leader and honoured her with a ceremonial golden shawl.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs Anil Desai and Milind Narvekar were also present during the meeting, which lasted nearly an hour.

The discussions reportedly covered the defeat of the delimitation Bill in Parliament, the Congress’ approach towards the BJP and the future direction of the INDIA bloc. The leaders also discussed the role of regional and smaller parties in the Opposition alliance and the challenges they could face in the coming political landscape.

The possible impact of delimitation on southern states and the need for greater coordination among affected states and regional parties also figured prominently in the discussions.

After meeting Thackeray, Kanimozhi travelled to Delhi, where she held separate meetings with Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and his daughter and Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule.

The series of meetings has raised speculation that the DMK could be exploring greater coordination among regional parties that have differences with the Congress. Such an initiative, if it takes shape, could potentially lead to a broader regional formation at the national level independent of both the BJP and Congress.

Kanimozhi and Thackeray reportedly discussed increased cooperation among state-based parties opposed to the delimitation proposals, besides exchanging views on the possibility of creating a wider platform for regional forces.

The DMK had earlier stayed away from an anti-delimitation meeting convened in Chennai under the leadership of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, while the Congress participated in the gathering. The episode underscored differences within the Opposition over the strategy on delimitation.

Thackeray’s reported differences with the Congress in Maharashtra have added further political significance to Kanimozhi’s outreach.

Kanimozhi is expected to continue her consultations with other regional leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The proposed meetings are being seen as an effort by the DMK to assess the possibility of coordinated action among regional political forces.
