US President Donald Trump’s comments expressing support for the possible unification of Ireland and Northern Ireland have drawn opposition from British political leaders, who reiterated that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
During his two-day visit to Ireland, Trump said on Saturday that he would “love to see” the unification of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch criticised the remarks, saying Trump was “shooting from the hip as usual”, while comparing them with his earlier comments about Greenland and Canada potentially becoming the 51st US state.
“Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom,” Badenoch said in a post on X.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also rejected Trump’s position, stating: “Northern Ireland is a proud and integral part of the United Kingdom.”
However, Mick Mulvaney, a former Republican congressman who served as Trump’s special envoy to Northern Ireland during his first presidential term, cautioned against interpreting the comments as a change in Washington’s policy.
“This does not represent a shift in US foreign policy,” Mulvaney said.
UK Communities Secretary Angela Rayner also played down the significance of Trump’s remarks. Speaking to Sky News, she said Trump was expressing his views and stressed that the British government remained committed to the Good Friday Agreement.
The issue of Northern Ireland’s constitutional status is governed by the framework established under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which provides for a change in the region’s status if a majority supports it in a referendum.
Trump concluded his Ireland visit on Sunday at his Doonbeg golf resort in County Clare, where he presented the Irish Open trophy to Shane Lowry.
He also announced that the United States would remove tariffs on Irish whiskey, telling the crowd that he had agreed to the measure after repeated requests from people involved in the industry.
