Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced an alliance between the AAP and Goa Forward Party (GFP) ahead of the Goa Assembly elections, calling it a strong alternative to the BJP and Congress.
The alliance, named ‘Goa First’, was announced in the presence of GFP chief Vijai Sardesai at a joint press conference at Abolim Hall on Ganesh Chaturthi. Kejriwal described the occasion as the beginning of a “new chapter” in Goa’s politics and said the alliance would seek to form the next government in the state.
Kejriwal alleged that Goa’s voters had repeatedly been left without a viable alternative to the BJP and Congress. Referring to the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections, he accused Congress of “horse-trading” its MLAs and subsequently helping the BJP form governments.
He claimed that voters had been “betrayed twice” and were not willing to face a similar situation for a third time.
According to Kejriwal, the present political arrangement in Goa reflected an understanding between the BJP and Congress. He alleged that leaders from both parties publicly attack each other during elections but later work together to form governments.
Kejriwal also criticised the state government, alleging that it had no clear ideology and describing it as a government driven by money and “mafia raj”. He contrasted this with the alliance’s “Goa First” approach and alleged that builders and contractors exercised excessive influence across sectors.
He said the alliance was intended to provide voters who are opposed to the BJP and dissatisfied with Congress with a non-BJP, non-Congress political alternative.
Kejriwal asserted that the BJP would not secure a majority in the coming election and claimed that several Congress MLAs who win could eventually move to the BJP. He said the ‘Goa First’ alliance had been formed specifically to prevent such a scenario and expressed confidence that it would win a full majority and form the next government.
