Road accidents remain a major public safety concern in Jammu and Kashmir, with official data identifying multiple contributing factors, including human error, environmental conditions and vehicle-related issues.
Over-speeding has consistently emerged as a leading cause of road casualties in the Union Territory. Other factors include distracted driving, mobile phone use, violations of traffic rules, wrong-side driving, jumping traffic signals and dangerous overtaking, particularly at blind curves.
Two-wheeler crashes also record high fatality rates in cases where riders do not wear helmets. Accidents have additionally involved underage or unlicensed drivers, inadequate driving training, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and driver fatigue.
The risk is particularly acute on national highways passing through hilly and difficult terrain, including the Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban stretch. Several such roads are narrow and lack essential safety measures such as guardrails and adequate signage.
Road safety inspections have also identified structural deficiencies on major routes, including poorly positioned U-turns, unauthorised access points from residential areas and improperly placed road grills.
