Academy and Grammy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman has opened up about the musical vision behind ‘Jai Jai Ram’, the first song from the upcoming epic Ramayana Part One, saying the track was created to retain the purity and intimacy of a prayer while giving it a cinematic scale.
The song was unveiled by the makers on the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, marking the beginning of the film’s musical journey with the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
“At the heart of ‘Jai Jai Ram’ is the simple and powerful repetition of Shri Ram’s name. Musically, the intention was to preserve the purity and intimacy of a prayer while allowing the composition to grow into a cinematic song,” Rahman said in a statement.
He added that singers Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal had brought their distinct emotional expressions to Dr Kumar Vishwas’ lyrics while maintaining the devotional essence of the composition.
“I hope audiences find both a sense of peace and a personal connection in it,” Rahman said.
‘Jai Jai Ram’ blends the spiritual character of an aarti with a cinematic soundscape. Its lyrics centre on Shri Ram’s compassion, protection and commitment to dharma, while the repeated invocation forms the devotional core of the song.
Kumar Vishwas said the three words “Jai Jai Ram” contained “a complete prayer” and explained that his intention was not to describe Shri Ram, but to express the relationship devotees share with him as a guide, source of strength and refuge.
“The language has been kept simple and direct because true devotion needs no ornamentation. I hope that when people hear the song, they do not merely listen to it, but find their own prayer within it,” he said.
Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Shri Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman.
Produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, and distributed by Sony Pictures, the film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and is scheduled to release in cinemas on Diwali 2026.
