Rajasthan Police have arrested 45-year-old Rahul Jha, accused of killing his wife and three daughters at their home in Jaipur’s Kardhani area, from a hotel in Reengus, officials said on Monday.

Jha was apprehended on Sunday night after investigators traced his movements through CCTV footage. Police said that after allegedly committing the murders, he travelled by e-rickshaw and visited three temples in Jaipur, where he spent the day.

During interrogation, investigators found that Jha had allegedly planned to kill only his wife and eldest daughter. Police said he suspected that his eldest daughter was in a relationship and believed that a man was visiting their house. His wife, according to investigators, would defend their daughter, leading to frequent arguments between the couple.

Jha reportedly told police that he had been under stress over issues concerning his wife and eldest daughter for the past several months. He had allegedly been asking his wife for two to three months to counsel their daughter, whom he suspected of being involved in a romantic relationship.

Police said Jha also suspected that someone was visiting his daughter at night and was upset about her frequent outings with acquaintances. Investigators were told that she had recently participated in the Kanwar Yatra with a male acquaintance, following which Jha had repeatedly warned her against associating with strangers.

According to the preliminary investigation, Jha was concerned about who would look after his two younger daughters if he was arrested and jailed after killing his wife and eldest daughter. Police suspect this concern led him to kill the younger daughters as well.

Investigators said Jha had brought two large stones from outside the house and carried one inside. He allegedly first attacked his wife before killing his eldest daughter. He then attacked his two younger daughters, who were sleeping in a downstairs room.

Police also questioned Jha about why he spared his 85-year-old father. According to police sources, the elderly man receives a monthly pension of Rs 33,000. Investigators found that Jha’s brother was expected to look after their father if the rest of the family were killed, which police believe may have been why he was spared.

The investigation also revealed that Jha frequently visited the Khatu Shyam Ji temple and had gone there five or six days before the murders. After speaking to neighbours and acquaintances, police learned of his regular visits to the temple and examined CCTV footage there.

Jha was spotted near a hotel in the footage. Police subsequently checked CCTV recordings from Reengus railway station and found him wandering around the station and the Bikaner bus stand throughout the day. His movements eventually helped investigators trace him to a hotel in Reengus, where he was arrested.
