Actor Chetan Hansraj has disagreed with his friend Rohit Roy’s recent criticism of television, rejecting the description of the small screen as a “dustbin medium” and defending the professionalism of TV actors.
Rohit had reportedly said that television lacked the class associated with film actors. Reacting to the remarks in an interaction with IANS, Chetan said he was unsure what had prompted his friend’s comments but maintained that television remained an important medium watched by millions.
“Rohit is a good friend of mine, but honestly, I don’t know where this is coming from. TV is not a dustbin medium. Yes, it has stalled in terms of creativity and progress, the stories are the same and not moving forward, and that is why it is declining,” Chetan said.
He blamed producers and television channels for not experimenting enough with fresh content, arguing that the audience and market were ready for innovation.
Chetan, who made his television debut as young Balram in B.R. Chopra’s iconic Mahabharat, went on to feature in popular shows including Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kkusum, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby and Jodha Akbar. He later transitioned to films, appearing in projects such as Bodyguard and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara.
Addressing Rohit’s comments about TV actors lacking class, Chetan said inappropriate behaviour exists in every profession and should not be used to judge an entire fraternity.
“I am a TV actor and I have carried myself with grace all my life,” he said, adding that many television actors conduct themselves professionally.
Chetan also defended the acting abilities of television performers, saying they can often deliver the same lines more effectively than actors working in films and other mediums.
“I would definitely tell you one thing for sure – TV actors are far superior to actors who work in films and other mediums, because if you give a TV actor and a movie actor the same lines, the TV actor will nail it,” he said.
He stressed that he was not taking sides and had experienced different aspects of the entertainment industry. According to him, film actors also benefit significantly from larger publicity and PR budgets, which can influence public perception.
Despite disagreeing with Rohit’s remarks, Chetan maintained that the actor remained a close friend.
Meanwhile, Chetan is gearing up for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Yash, Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi.
