A selection-grade constable was arrested on Monday for allegedly hitting and injuring a Station House Officer (SHO) with his vehicle near the Bijbehara police station in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said.
The incident occurred late Sunday evening when SHO Majid Ahmad Khan was on duty near the police station. Officials said the constable was allegedly driving at high speed when his vehicle struck the SHO, leaving him injured.
The accused was identified as Khurshid Ahmad Wani, a selection-grade constable and son of Mohd Abdullah Wani. He is a resident of Bindoo in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district.
Police later seized the vehicle involved in the incident, bearing registration number JK16A-3739.
Officials said Wani was arrested on charges related to rash and negligent driving and was being questioned as part of the investigation. Further details are awaited.
Road accidents remain a major concern in Jammu and Kashmir, where overspeeding, reckless driving and challenging mountainous terrain contribute significantly to crashes. Traffic authorities and the Motor Vehicles Department have also pointed to human error, poor road infrastructure and vehicle-related issues as factors behind accidents.
Speeding on highways and winding hill roads, distracted driving, including mobile phone use, and failure to wear helmets or seat belts increase the risk of serious injuries and fatalities.
The region’s steep slopes, sharp curves, narrow stretches and rocky terrain, particularly along important routes such as the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, add to the risks. Potholes, inadequate road maintenance, missing crash barriers and insufficient warning signs further compound road safety challenges.
