The Congress on Sunday raised four questions over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, accusing the government of adopting a “calibrated capitulation” towards China and questioning its approach to bilateral ties.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, who is also the party’s communications in-charge, questioned the government’s handling of the India-China border situation, including developments in eastern Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
Ramesh referred to Modi’s June 19, 2020 remarks that no one had entered Indian territory following the Galwan Valley clashes and asked whether the statement had weakened India’s negotiating position. He also alleged that India had given up traditional patrolling and grazing rights in parts of eastern Ladakh.
The Congress leader further alleged that China’s position on Arunachal Pradesh had hardened, citing the renaming of places, renewed claims over territory it refers to as “South Tibet” and the proposed 60,000-MW Medog hydropower project on the Brahmaputra. These claims could not be independently verified from the statement.
Ramesh also questioned what he described as a “softening of position” on China’s alleged support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. He contrasted remarks attributed to Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt General Rahul Singh in July 2025 with comments made by former Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on August 25, 2026.
The Congress leader also criticised the government over India’s growing trade deficit with China. He said the deficit reached a record $112.6 billion in 2025-26 and asked the government to spell out its roadmap for reducing dependence on China for critical raw materials, components and intermediates.
The questions came a day after Modi told Xi that peace and tranquillity along the India-China border remained an “essential component” of efforts to build stronger bilateral relations.
