A joint team of the Punjab Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Ludhiana Commissionerate Police on Sunday foiled an alleged mass shooting bid and killed two armed operatives linked to the Doni Bal gang in retaliatory firing near the Atam Park Under Bridge in Ludhiana.
Ludhiana Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma identified the deceased as Karanjot Singh alias Nona and Sandeep Singh, both residents of Sultanwind Road in Amritsar. Police recovered three automatic pistols and around 50 live cartridges from the spot.
According to CP Sharma, police had received specific intelligence inputs about a planned attack and set up a checkpoint near the Atam Park Under Bridge. The two suspects were intercepted while travelling on a black Hero Splendor motorcycle without a registration number.
The suspects allegedly attempted to flee after being signalled to stop and opened fire at the police team, triggering a chase. Police said the assailants continued firing and two bullets struck the official police vehicle.
“Exercising retaliatory fire in self-defence, the police team neutralised both armed attackers on the spot,” CP Sharma said.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the two men were allegedly in direct contact with gangsters Doni Bal and Shaganpreet and had been tasked with carrying out a mass shooting at a blood donation camp being organised at Marryland Palace on Dugri Road in Ludhiana on Sunday, the Commissioner said.
Police said Karanjot Singh was a history-sheeter facing two previous cases involving the Arms Act, robbery and the NDPS Act. Sandeep Singh was also facing a criminal case.
The police are tracing other suspected accomplices and investigating the gang’s backward and forward linkages.
A case is being registered at Model Town Police Station under Sections 109, 221, 132, 62 and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
