Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday described the successful conclusion of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi as a significant achievement for India, saying the unanimous New Delhi Declaration reflected the country’s growing influence on the global stage.
The BRICS Summit was held on September 12–13 at Bharat Mandapam under the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. Member countries unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration.
Taking to X, Rajnath Singh said the summit had concluded successfully under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with India placing resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability at the forefront of its priorities as BRICS Chair.
He said India had particularly focused on connecting BRICS cooperation with ordinary citizens, describing an inclusive and human-centric approach as a defining feature of the New Delhi summit.
Referring to the BRICS 2026 New Delhi Declaration, Singh called its adoption a “big achievement” and said it was more than a document, describing it as a reflection of India’s growing global influence under Prime Minister Modi.
“India has put the Global South at the centre, not at the margins, championing a more inclusive, representative and balanced world order. Rooted in our civilisational ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, India has once again shown that leadership is not about having the loudest voice, but the strongest consensus. As India leads, the world listens,” he said.
“I congratulate PM Modi for the super success of BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Its success has indeed left an indelible mark on the global stage,” the Defence Minister added.
The New Delhi Declaration commended India for hosting the Outreach/BRICS Plus Dialogue segment of the summit and said India’s chairship had provided “new impetus” to strengthening international cooperation and solidarity.
BRICS leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the grouping’s principles of mutual respect and understanding, sovereign equality, solidarity, democracy, openness, inclusiveness, collaboration and consensus.
The consensus reached on a Joint Statement on the first day of the summit was described as a major diplomatic breakthrough, particularly in view of the sharply divergent geopolitical positions among member countries.
The declaration also strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, with BRICS nations reaching consensus on adopting a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism.
Building on two decades of BRICS cooperation, the declaration reaffirmed the commitment of member countries to strengthen the expanded grouping across three pillars — political and security cooperation, economic and financial cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
It also called for strengthening the BRICS strategic partnership for the benefit of its people through the promotion of peace, a more representative and fairer international order, a reinvigorated and reformed multilateral system, sustainable development and inclusive growth.
