At least nine people, including three members of a family, have died at Tuensang Civil Hospital in Nagaland over the past three days after allegedly consuming suspected spurious liquor, prompting police to issue a red alert and warn people against consuming alcohol from unknown or unauthorised sources.
According to officials, the victims reportedly developed symptoms including breathlessness after consuming suspected adulterated liquor and subsequently died. However, police said the exact cause of the deaths has not yet been scientifically established.
Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma said the deaths were suspected to be linked to spurious liquor. A police statement said nine deaths were reported in Tuensang Town and Chendang Saddle on September 10 and 11.
“Based on the information presently available, all the deaths have a direct or indirect circumstantial linkage with alcohol consumption and are being investigated accordingly,” the statement said.
Preliminary inquiries found that most of the deceased had reportedly consumed liquor before developing symptoms such as blurred vision, severe headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Police said spurious or adulterated liquor remained a possible cause, but forensic and scientific examination would be required for confirmation.
Post-mortem examinations were not conducted in most cases as the bodies had already been taken for funerals before police became aware of the pattern of deaths. Investigators are therefore relying on medical records, preliminary inquiries and other available evidence.
Police are probing the source and nature of the liquor and examining whether any individual or group may be responsible. Three members of a family from whose premises liquor was reportedly purchased by some victims were among those who died. Separately, a person reportedly linked to the liquor seller died by hanging, with police investigating the case as a suspected suicide.
Searches and raids across Tuensang Town and Chendang Saddle led to the seizure of around 470 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor and beer cans from various locations.
Police have intensified public awareness efforts and urged residents to avoid liquor obtained from unauthorised, unknown or suspected adulterated sources.
