Rajasthan Police have arrested 45-year-old Rahul Jha, who allegedly fled Jaipur after killing his wife and three daughters, in the Reengus area of Sikar district.
Police said a special team tracked Jha’s movements through CCTV footage after receiving information that he was in the Reengus area. A reward of Rs 25,000 had been announced on Saturday for information leading to his arrest.
According to police sources, Jha travelled to Khatu Shyam Ji temple after leaving Jaipur and later stayed at a hotel. Reportedly short of money, he attempted to sell his ring, but the hotelier allegedly refused to pay even Rs 500 for it. Jha subsequently left the hotel and reached Reengus.
Police teams kept watch near a hotel in the area. When Jha emerged with his face covered with a cloth, the team identified and apprehended him. Investigators suspect he had been covering his face to avoid recognition.
The murders came to light around 10 a.m. on Friday when Kardhani police reached Jha’s house and found the bodies of his wife, Geeta Jha, 40, and their three daughters — Nandini, 22, Radhika, 17, and Girish alias Gauri, 14.
Geeta’s body was found in a first-floor room, while the three daughters were found in two rooms on the ground floor. Police also recovered Jha’s blood-stained clothes from the house, while his mobile phone was found switched off.
Preliminary investigation suggests Jha was under heavy debt and financial pressure may have been a factor in the alleged killings. Police suspect he mixed poison into food served to the victims. Investigators further suspect that, fearing they might survive, he allegedly attacked them with a cement slab weighing around 10 kg while they were unconscious.
Police said Jha collected milk at around 7 a.m. and prepared tea for his 85-year-old father, Lakshminath Jha, before telling him he was going out and leaving the house.
Jha is currently in police custody and is being questioned about the alleged motive and sequence of events.
