President Murmu Hails India’s Women’s Asia Cup Triumph, Calls Team Inspiration for Youth

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on winning the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026, describing the players as a source of “great inspiration” for India’s youth, particularly its daughters.

India clinched the continental title for a record-extending eighth time after defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in Sunday’s final in Dubai. The victory also saw India avenge their defeat to Sri Lanka in the 2024 final.

In a post on X, President Murmu congratulated the entire team and praised its performance throughout the tournament.

“My heartiest congratulations to all the members of Team India on winning Women’s T20 Asia Cup Championship 2026. They played superbly as a team throughout the tournament, winning all the matches. They have done the country proud,” she said.

“They are a source of great inspiration for our youth, especially our daughters. I am sure, they will script many more inspiring chapters of success and excellence,” she added.

India dominated Sri Lanka across departments in the final. They posted 183/5, with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana putting together a record 129-run opening partnership.

Shafali top-scored with 68 off 39 balls and also registered the fastest half-century in Women’s Asia Cup history, reaching the milestone in just 24 deliveries. Mandhana contributed a composed 59 off 39 balls.

Sri Lanka fought back during the latter part of India’s innings, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur dismissed for 14 and Richa Ghosh falling for 17. G Kamalini, playing her first match of the tournament, provided a late boost with a five-ball 15.

India’s bowlers then completed a comprehensive victory. Shree Charani claimed 4-20, while Deepti Sharma took 3-19 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 111. Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 36, while Nilakshika Silva made 22.

The triumph was India’s sixth Asia Cup final victory over Sri Lanka across the ODI and T20 formats, including the 5-0 win in the two-team 2004 tournament.
