Four miners were killed and five others injured after a gas explosion inside a coal mine in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, officials said.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Harnai district after gas accumulated inside the mine, according to official sources cited by Xinhua.
Rescue teams from the Pakistan Army were rushed to the site following the explosion. They recovered the bodies of four miners and rescued five others who had sustained injuries.
The injured workers were shifted to Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, for further medical treatment, officials said.
The latest incident is among a series of fatal accidents reported in Balochistan’s coal mines in recent months, highlighting the dangers faced by miners working in the province.
In August, three coal miners, including two Afghan nationals, died in Duki district after inhaling poisonous methane gas that had accumulated inside a mine. The miners reportedly lost consciousness while working underground. Other workers alerted authorities and local miners, prompting a rescue operation, according to local media reports.
Rescuers later found the three workers inside the mine, but they had already died. The victims included two Afghan nationals and one Pakistani national.
Earlier in July, 34 miners were killed in a methane gas explosion at a coal mine in the Sorange area of Balochistan, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.
A large section of the mine collapsed following the blast, trapping workers under the rubble. Officials said 41 miners were inside the mine when the explosion occurred, while the bodies of 34 workers were subsequently recovered.
