West Bengal Police have arrested two youths for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Habra area of North 24 Parganas district after she was allegedly made to consume alcohol mixed with intoxicating substances, officials said on Monday.
According to police, the minor had come to visit her uncle’s residence in the Habra Municipality area. On Saturday evening, a female acquaintance from the neighbourhood allegedly took her to the house of a local youth known to her, where another youth was also present.
Investigators said the girl was allegedly made to consume alcohol laced with intoxicating substances during a gathering on the rooftop of the house. The group later reportedly went for a walk, following which the two accused allegedly sexually assaulted the minor near a wooded area close to a Shiva temple.
Police said the accused allegedly fled after leaving the girl at the spot when she became unconscious. The other girl who had accompanied the victim also returned home.
When the 14-year-old failed to return late into the night, her family approached Habra Police Station and lodged a missing person complaint.
Police subsequently launched a search and questioned the other girl accompanying the victim. Based on the information gathered during the investigation, officers traced and rescued the girl early Sunday. She was found unconscious and was immediately admitted to Habra State General Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
Following a complaint from the victim’s family, police registered a case and arrested the two accused on Sunday night. Officials said one of the arrested youths had previously faced allegations of misconduct involving women.
A senior officer of the Barasat Police District said both accused were arrested on the basis of the family’s complaint and were being questioned. The investigation is underway.
The victim’s father demanded stringent action against those responsible, saying the family had never imagined that a routine visit to a neighbourhood friend could result in such a traumatic incident.
“The girl went to visit her uncle’s neighbourhood friend in good faith. But no one could imagine that the consequences would be so terrible. I demand exemplary punishment for the two accused youths,” he said.
