Himachal Pradesh recorded its 29th lowest August rainfall since 1901, receiving 212.5 mm of precipitation during the month against the normal 256.8 mm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.
The highest August rainfall recorded in the state since 1901 was 542.4 mm in 1927, according to the weather department.
The state experienced scattered to fairly widespread rainfall on several days in August. Active monsoon conditions were recorded on August 5, 7, 11, 19 and 31, while weak monsoon activity was observed on August 2, 3, 9, 13, 14, 21, 25, 27, 28, 29 and 30.
Very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in Sirmaur and Bilaspur on August 4; Sirmaur and Una on August 5; Kangra on August 15; and Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Kangra on August 19.
Heavy rainfall was also recorded at isolated locations in several districts throughout the month. Bilaspur received heavy rain on August 2, while Mandi, Bilaspur and Sirmaur recorded it on August 3. Sirmaur again witnessed heavy rainfall on August 4 and 5, with Kangra, Mandi, Bilaspur and Hamirpur also affected on August 5.
Chamba and Kangra recorded heavy rainfall on August 6, followed by Sirmaur, Mandi and Kangra on August 7. Kangra received heavy rain on August 29, while Chamba, Kangra, Bilaspur, Sirmaur and Mandi recorded heavy rainfall on August 31.
Among the districts, Kangra received the highest actual rainfall at 658.0 mm, while Lahaul-Spiti recorded the lowest at 27.8 mm.
Sirmaur recorded the highest positive rainfall departure at 17 per cent, whereas Lahaul-Spiti had the highest negative departure at minus 76 per cent.
Bilaspur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur and Una received normal precipitation during August. Chamba, Hamirpur and Solan recorded deficient rainfall, while the remaining districts experienced large deficient rainfall.
