Actress Monalisa has responded to comparisons between her portrayal of courtesan Vasant Sena in Charudutt Ki Vasant Sena and Rekha’s acclaimed performance as the same character in the 1984 film Utsav.
Acknowledging Rekha’s stature, Monalisa said she considers the veteran actress a legend and believes there can be no comparison between their performances.
“She is a legend. She is iconic, and there can be absolutely no comparison with her. I am simply lucky that I got an opportunity to play such a character. If I can even bring a small fraction of what she brought to such a role, I would consider myself fortunate. We have tried our best,” Monalisa told IANS in an exclusive interview.
The actress said she feels fortunate to have been offered a role of this nature, particularly as part of a micro-drama series. She credited KUKU TV for giving her the opportunity, describing the project as a new level in her career.
“The fact that something like this was even conceptualized for a micro-drama series is very interesting. I would like to thank KUKU TV for giving me this opportunity because this is definitely a new level in my career,” she said.
Monalisa added that audiences have responded positively to her portrayal and that the role has allowed her to demonstrate a different side of her acting abilities.
“I am able to show people that I can also portray a character like this, and that feels really good,” she said.
In Charudutt Ki Vasant Sena, Monalisa plays Vasant Sena, a courtesan in the period drama. Rekha played the same character in Utsav, the 1984 film directed by Girish Karnad, which also featured Shashi Kapoor, Amjad Khan, Shankar Nag, Shekhar Suman, Anuradha Patel, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Annu Kapoor, Sanjana Kapoor and Kunal Kapoor.
