CPI(M) Leaders Allegedly Attacked in Tamil Nadu’s Ulundurpet, Party Demands Arrest of All Accused

Ulundurpet, August 23, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The CPI(M) has condemned the alleged attack on four people, including senior party leaders, in Kallakurichi district’s Ulundurpet area and demanded the immediate arrest of all those accused in the incident.

In a statement, CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Secretary P. Shanmugam said district secretary D.M. Jayashankar, former district secretary D. Ezhumalai, district committee member D.S. Mohan and their car driver were attacked by a group of eight people on the night of August 21.

The incident occurred after the party leaders had completed arrangements for a protest planned in Ulundurpet. According to the CPI(M), they travelled through Kiliyur village and parked their vehicle when a group from Vadamangalam village confronted them.

The party alleged that the group verbally abused the leaders, made derogatory remarks against the CPI(M), damaged its flag and smashed the car windows before assaulting those inside.

The CPI(M) described the incident as a planned attack that could have had fatal consequences. It alleged that the assault was linked to the party’s campaign over reported irregularities in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Vadamangalam.

The party claimed that a former village panchayat president had collected money from residents after assuring them that 22 houses would be constructed under the scheme, but the houses were not completed. The CPI(M) said it had mobilised the affected residents and organised protests seeking justice and the return of their money.

The party also said its workers had been raising several other local issues affecting residents.

Shanmugam alleged that the former panchayat president was angered by the CPI(M)’s intervention and claimed that a group of eight people, including the former president’s two sons, planned and executed the attack in retaliation.

A complaint has been filed at Kalamarudur police station. The injured leaders were treated at a hospital and have since returned home.

The CPI(M), however, expressed concern that police had arrested only one person so far. Its State Executive Committee urged Tamil Nadu Police to arrest all the accused, including the former panchayat president’s two sons, and invoke stringent legal provisions to ensure appropriate punishment.
