Mumbai Police have arrested an engineering student in connection with a hit-and-run incident in Vile Parle in which a 15-year-old girl was injured, officials said on Sunday.
The incident took place on NS Road No. 1 near Mithibai College when the teenager, an American citizen of Indian origin, was crossing the road. According to police, a motorcycle allegedly travelling at high speed struck her before the rider fled without stopping to help.
The accused has been identified as Divit Amit Mehta, an engineering student. Police said he was traced and apprehended with the help of CCTV footage following the incident.
The girl was left injured on the road after the collision. Police personnel reached the spot after receiving information about the accident and arranged for her to be taken to a nearby hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Further details about the extent of her injuries were awaited.
The Juhu Police Station initially registered a case against an unidentified person on charges related to rash driving and launched an investigation.
Investigators examined CCTV recordings from cameras installed around the accident site, including footage from nearby shops, buildings, junctions and other locations along NS Road No. 1 and around Mithibai College.
Police subsequently identified the motorcycle and its rider through the footage and took Mehta into custody.
Legal proceedings are underway, and further investigation into the case is continuing.
