Tamil Nadu: Nilgiris tiger declared man-eater after two fatal attacks

Nilgiris, August 23, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has stepped up efforts to capture a male tiger suspected of killing two people in Lauriston, near Gudalur, after officials declared the animal a man-eater based on evidence that it consumed parts of its latest victim.

The tiger, estimated to be between eight and 10 years old, is suspected to have killed K. Ravikumar, whose body was found around 2 p.m. on Friday, nearly 200 metres from his house.

The incident followed the death of 58-year-old M. Balakrishnan of Field 4 in Lauriston Estate. His partially eaten remains were recovered on August 9.

Gudalur District Forest Officer P. Devaraj said the nature of the injuries and evidence that the tiger had consumed parts of the victims led forest officials to classify the animal as a man-eater. Officials also believe the same tiger was responsible for both attacks after finding similar pugmarks at the two locations.

Six cages baited with live animals have been placed along routes believed to be used by the tiger, including areas near the attack sites.

The department has deployed four specialised teams for the operation. Two seven-member teams are tracking the animal on foot by examining pugmarks, scat and other signs, while two teams are using drones to monitor its movements.

Ground teams have been equipped with firearms and protective gear. Officials said their priority would be to tranquilise and capture the tiger, but it could be shot if it charges at personnel or poses an immediate threat to human life.

Forest officials have not yet been able to establish the animal’s health condition from camera-trap images. Devaraj said a reliable assessment would be possible only after the tiger is captured and examined by a veterinarian.

After its capture, a decision will be taken on whether to relocate the animal to Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur or send it to the Wildlife Transit and Treatment Centre at Pethikuttai in Sirumugai for treatment. The move will require approval from Chief Wildlife Warden Rakesh Kumar Dogra.

As a precautionary measure, estate management has been directed to suspend work for several more days in areas where tiger movement has been reported.

Forest officials are also advising residents to remain indoors after dark and avoid entering plantations and forested areas until the capture operation is completed.
