Four members of a Hindu family, including a retired schoolteacher and his 12-year-old son, were found dead inside their locked home in Rangpur city under circumstances that have prompted a police investigation, officials said.
The bodies were recovered around 11.30 p.m. on Saturday from the family’s residence in the Daspara (Machhuapara) area. Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Kader said police broke open the lock and entered the house after being alerted to the situation.
The deceased were identified as retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, and their son Priyam Chakraborty, 12.
Ganapati retired from Rangpur Zilla School on December 31 last year and had subsequently started working as a homoeopathic practitioner, according to relatives. Agami completed her Master’s degree in English from Rangpur Carmichael College this year, while Priyam was a Class 5 student at Rangpur Zilla School.
Family members became concerned after losing contact with the household. Pritilata’s younger sister, Puja Chakraborty, said she last spoke to her sister on Thursday afternoon and that all four family members’ mobile phones had been switched off since Thursday night.
She said relatives reached the house on Saturday night and found the main gate locked and the lights switched off. Police subsequently entered the premises and recovered the bodies.
Relatives said they were unaware of any possible motive and described Ganapati as a person without known enemies.
Police, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Detective Branch have begun investigating the deaths. CID official Subir Chowdhury said the bodies of Pritilata and Agami were found on the staircase, Ganapati’s body was recovered from the roof, while Priyam’s body was found under a bed.
Police said the circumstances, timing and motive behind the deaths have not yet been established. Investigators are examining the scene and gathering evidence to determine what happened and identify those responsible.
