Ex-MLA Arabul Islam’s Car Attacked With Crude Bombs, Bricks in Bengal’s Bhangar

Kolkata, August 23, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Former Indian Secular Front (ISF) leader and ex-Trinamool Congress MLA Arabul Islam’s car was allegedly attacked with crude bombs and bricks in Bhangar, West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, a day after he announced his resignation from the ISF.

The incident took place on Saturday night in the Uriapara area under Polerhat police station as Islam was returning home from a hospital. According to Islam, two crude bombs and bricks were hurled at his vehicle.

He said neither bomb struck the car and both exploded on the road. However, bricks shattered the vehicle’s glass, while he narrowly escaped being hit. Other people were also reportedly travelling in the car, and the driver accelerated away from the spot after the attack.

No injuries were reported.

Islam alleged that ISF workers were behind the attack and specifically blamed Bhangar MLA Nawshad Siddiqui and the party. The ISF had not responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.

“I left the ISF, and that’s why they carried out the attack,” Islam told media persons on Sunday morning, alleging that he had been targeted since quitting the party.

Police have not confirmed the identity of the attackers or established a motive. Acting on Islam’s complaint, Polerhat police reached the area and inspected the alleged scene of the attack. Investigators are examining CCTV footage to identify those responsible. No arrests or detentions have been reported so far.

The attack came a day after Islam announced his departure from the ISF, accusing its leadership of dictatorial behaviour. He also alleged that some ISF workers in Bhangar had committed atrocities against ordinary people and said he was leaving the party in protest.

Islam had joined the ISF before the Assembly elections after leaving the Trinamool Congress, where he had been a prominent leader in Bhangar and had served as an MLA. The ISF later fielded him from Canning Paschim, but he lost the election.

Following the election, his differences with the ISF leadership reportedly grew and his participation in party activities declined. His resignation has also fuelled speculation about a possible return to the Trinamool Congress, which he had hinted at after quitting the ISF.
