Sher-e-Punjab T20 League: Gill says Fazilka Falcons’ success will be measured by growth of young players

India captain Shubman Gill is looking forward to leading Fazilka Falcons in the 2026 Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, saying the development of young cricketers will be as important as competing for the title.

The six-team tournament is scheduled to begin on August 30 at the I.S. Bindra Stadium in Chandigarh, providing emerging players from Punjab with an opportunity to compete alongside established cricketers.

Gill said he was excited about taking charge of Fazilka Falcons and working with a talented group of players.

“I am very excited to lead the Fazilka Falcons. We have a very talented and exciting group of players, and I am really looking forward to working with the team. It will be a great opportunity for all of us to learn from each other and play some good cricket,” he said.

The India skipper also thanked the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) for creating a platform through the league for young players to gain experience and showcase their abilities.

Gill said young cricketers could use the tournament as a stepping stone towards bigger opportunities, particularly through exposure to quality opposition.

Drawing on his own international experience, Gill said he wanted to help younger members of the Fazilka Falcons squad develop their game awareness and confidence, particularly when dealing with pressure.

“For young players, it is important to believe in their ability and stay calm when they are under pressure. I want to help them understand the game better, whether it is about reading a situation, making decisions or handling pressure,” he said.

While winning the trophy remains a key objective, Gill said the league’s wider success should also be judged by the progress made by emerging players.

“Obviously, winning the trophy is something we will be aiming for, but for me, success will also be about seeing young players from our team grow during the tournament,” he said.

The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League will bring together six teams featuring some of Punjab’s promising young cricketers, with Gill’s leadership adding international experience to Fazilka Falcons’ campaign.
