Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff will contest an all-American women’s singles final at the Cincinnati Open, while Frances Tiafoe and France’s Arthur Fils advanced to the men’s championship match after contrasting semifinal victories.
Third seed Pegula ended defending champion Iga Swiatek’s title defence with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory in a two-hour, 47-minute battle. The American rallied from 1-3 down in the deciding set, levelled at 4-4 and then secured the crucial break before serving out the match.
Pegula had taken control of the opening set after an early exchange of breaks, moving 4-2 ahead before Swiatek fought back to level at 4-4. Another break at 5-5 put the American in position to take the set.
Swiatek responded strongly in the second, breaking for a 4-2 lead and eventually forcing a decider. Pegula, however, regained her composure and completed the comeback.
“The match was very difficult. Swiatek is in excellent form. It’s fantastic to have beaten such a great athlete as Iga in the semi-finals and to have reached another 1000 final,” Pegula said.
She will face fourth seed Gauff, who defeated Czech Republic’s Sara Bejlek 6-4, 6-1 in 76 minutes. Gauff initially led 4-1 before Bejlek levelled the opening set at 4-4, but the American broke again and took control. She then dominated the second set, breaking twice to secure her place in the final.
In the men’s draw, Fils defeated seventh seed Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 in 67 minutes to extend his winning streak to five matches. The Frenchman used his powerful forehand effectively and struck 22 winners and six aces.
Fils will meet American Tiafoe, who defeated compatriot Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 6-3. Tiafoe broke late in the opening set before serving it out and then took control of the second set to seal his place in the final.
The Cincinnati Open finals are scheduled for Sunday.
