Playback singer Shaan has revealed that he once considered pursuing careers in advertising and journalism rather than music, despite growing up in a family with a strong musical legacy.
Shaan made the revelation while appearing on film trade expert Komal Nahta’s podcast Game Changers: The Music Series, where he reflected on his early years and eventual journey into playback singing.
The singer said he initially regarded himself as the least accomplished musician in his family, which included several accomplished singers and a composer.
“My father was a composer and a very good singer. My grandfather, mother and sister were also good singers, so I honestly felt I was the weakest link when it came to music in my family,” Shaan said.
He recalled that his interests during his younger years were focused elsewhere. “Growing up, I had the rebel in me. I wanted to do journalism and advertising, so my mind was diverted towards those interests,” he said.
Shaan said singing came naturally to him and that he had not undergone formal training. Although opportunities came his way because of his family connections in Mumbai’s music industry, he initially turned them down.
“Singing came naturally to me, I didn’t train for it. People feel it’s genetic, but I feel it’s conditioning,” he said.
He eventually began accepting singing opportunities, including work on jingles at a young age. Shaan said his mother worked as a chorus singer, while his father had numerous colleagues in the music industry, helping create early opportunities for him.
“I used to get opportunities, living in Mumbai and having singer-parents, but I rejected them. Then, I finally gave in,” he added.
Shaan went on to establish himself as a versatile playback singer, known for his soulful voice and songs that became popular across different phases of Indian music.
